I remember that saying being told to me when i was 18 , I went to pubs and would try to talk and ask people their opinions about religion and try to talk philosophical and all that about government and politics, but I remember seeing a few older men grinning at me about what i was saying tas if they were agreeing with my thoughts , but they told me that there are two things you dont talk about , especially in pubs, and that is religion and politics. Why is that so true on this Yahoo Answers?

The premise of this question assumes that one is interested in popularity with fellow humans. True Christians are more interested in pleasing God than in pleasing man.

(2 Timothy 4:3-5) For there will be a period of time when they will not put up with the healthful teaching, but, in accord with their own desires, they will accumulate teachers for themselves to have their ears tickled; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, whereas they will be turned aside to false stories. You, though, keep your senses in all things, suffer evil, do the work of an evangelizer, fully accomplish your ministry.

It seems significant that the relatively small religion of Jehovah's Witnesses are the ones best known for their worldwide preaching work. Yet Jesus commanded that ALL who would call themselves "Christian" perform this public work:

(Matthew 28:19,20) Go therefore and make disciples of people of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy spirit, teaching them to observe all the things I have commanded you. And, look! I am with you all the days until the conclusion of the system of things.

Openly discussing politics and religion are two topics that can lead to very heated discussions and ultimately physical confrontations. These are the two topics that especially back in the days of our grandfathers were held in very high regard. Remembering that the U.S. and as far as I know the U.K as well was founded on Christian beliefs and political views. Then add alcohol to it and peoples passions run much deeper.

These 2 subjects will always lead to quarrel, heated arguement,
and violent disagreement because each has his own belief, trust, and feelings which no one wants to loose. In such a peaceful circumstances and friendly atmosphere such as in the pub where everybody comes down there to relax and enjoy, it is wise not to bring out these subjects which will ultimately result in arguement that spoil the whole evening.

Good idea.
Dont talk about religion in public in a church.

As for pubs well........... if you talked about religion in a pub full of pi$$ed people then there is th edanger that someone might mistakenly believe that the dribble is true.

faith has been in politics for years. Pat Robinson, Jerry Falwell, Mike Huckabee. those are those that come to innovations. in the adventure that they were really Christian they could shun politics and develop into supporters of the dominion Jesus taught. instead they have made themselves enemies of the most intense and his son, Jesus. Adulteresses, do YOU no longer recognize that the friendship with the international is enmity with God? Whoever, for this reason, ought to be a chum of the international is constituting himself an enemy of God. James 4:4.

Those are the two subjects (apart from very personal stuff like family etc) that people feel very deeply about. In a pub, they may feel deeply & drunkly enough to give you a smack in the mouth; on YA they just sulk at you.

Many people have very strong opinions about those two subjects and discussing them in a bar can lead to arguments, fights and bad feelings. I think most people want to have a good, happy time when they go out and these discussions or debates can ruin the good time.

That's true everywhere.

People just can't handle being told they are misinformed, or incorrect.

Everyone thinks they are right, and instead of gathering evidence and research to back themselves up, they get angry and spout nonsense. Most of the time.

because both can draw out the worst in people, it is okay if they all agree to listen to each others opinons but some people are so pig headed that it ultimately ends up in a row.
