Best ever was Mrs. Brower, my high school Spanish teacher. She also had degrees in English, art and history and was well-traveled (she had lived in about 12 different countries: Japan, Germany, Holland, & Australia come to mind immediately)… so saying she was a well-rounded educator is a bit of an understatement. Once a month or so she’d set the books aside and just talk about life in general, something more teachers should do. She always kept things entertaining and was a spectacular role model.
Other good teachers included Ms. Pillsbury, sophomore year English aka the reason I rarely need spelling or grammar check unless I crave the satisfaction of seeing the message ‘no errors found’; Mr. Scariano (8th grade science) had a great sense of humor and always made everything fun; George, one of the Philosophy professors in college, and not just because he burned the syllabus on day one and told us to call him George; and Professor Farrell… the best Biology teacher ever, a walk in the woods with Prof. Farrell was an amazingly informative event.
Bad teachers… my 7th grade history teacher was the most boring person on the planet…. not only did he talk in a complete monotonous drone, but he also swayed back and forth from foot to foot as he stood at the head of the class lecturing, literally putting half the class to sleep; and Dr. Hogan for Organic Chemistry…. I will admit he was actually a lot of fun in the lab… but useless as a lecturer… when the class failed to understand Doc Hogan, he’d say it all over again verbatim, but in a louder voice.
Great question… thanks for the memories.
