I read this somewhere in his bio and I was surprised.

I'm not in any way supporting this particular policy, I'm just curious to know what it is about Greenland that could be so appealing.

In 1999, Buchanan wrote a book, "A Republic, Not an Empire", where he stated, "As for Greenland, the last great empty space in the western hemisphere, the huge island should remain permanently within the US defence perimeter, and eventually be formally annexed by the US."

So it is true, although how serious he was is to be determined.

Why this would be appealing is in part associated with the repulic (NOT Republican as party, rather as type of government) theory of land expansion. You can read more in the 10th Federalist Paper, or a quick (not the best, but easily understandable) summary here: http://www.antiwar.com/stromberg/s092899.html

There are lots of other sites that can explain the republican theory of land expansionism out there. Hope this helps some though. Cheers.

I never heard this. But maybe he meant during WW2, which the US did (in order to avoid Greenland being occupied by Nazi Germany).
