I've always understood mine to mean the following:
I have a 200 series 'si', it's an injection and the gearbox uses lower ratios so i get really good lift (acceleration) from a standing start.
L is something I always associated with Luxury trim.
So SLi would possibly mean Sports gearbox (lower ratio), Luxury trim, (if not Leather, then better fabric and lots of gadgets and Injection to signify fuel Injection.

The letters don't actually stand for anything.
They are just a set of letters made up to signify the trim and equipment level of the car.
Rover used the letters i, Si, SLi and GSi for the four trim levels on their cars for a few years. For diesel models, the i was replaced with a D, or with Di for versions with the intercooled 2.0-litre L-series engine.

SLi is purely a brand name, like a trim level. It simply identifies it from other cars in the range. SLi was one of the top models, above SL and S obviously.

It's just a term used to show what level of trim it has.
S tends to have a sportier interior and seats.
L is normally luxury.
i is for injection.
But they don't always actually mean anything.
It just means your SLI is better than the 420i model in terms of trim.
