Several years ago, Richard Dreyfuss was interviewed on a radio show here in Atlanta. He is a member of the Academy, and was asked about the voting process. He said that he doesn't have time to see all the films nominated every year, and that he gives his ballot to his daughter to fill out and complete.

Since that time, I've taken the Oscars with a grain of salt.

Yes, and it's the general feeling that they always have been. This is due mainly to the fact that they are run and winners are decided upon by the founding organisation - this being the convening body, the Foreign Press Association. It has long been thought that this body is financially linked to the success of certain films and those in power in Hollywood. Thus the preface world wide of "You're not serious...." when the general public (and those in the industry) are presented with the nominations and indeed the winners of various Academy Awards.
Personally, I pay far more attention to the Golden Globes which are voted upon through SAG (the Screen Actors Guild) and therefore, people in the know with less vested interest and apparently more integrity.
