If your tan is the same as your avatar, then I would say gold or bronze metallics would be a nice highlight of it.
You could also pick almost any other colour except dark ones like burgundy, black, navy blue, dark brown, etc.
Lighter colours would highlight the tan, but it would depend on the tone of your skin, which colours would look best.
Try going to the dress store, and holding the dress up under your chin to see what colour it makes your skin look, before trying it on. If the colour makes your skin glow, then buy that one. If it makes you look sallow, then don't buy that one.

I'd stay away from anything that is red, orange, or any dark shade of pink.
If you've got a dark tan (which in my opinion looks awful to begin with), and you wear a warm color such as those, you might as well dye your hair green and go to prom as an Oompa Loompa.
I've seen girls with tans wear those colors to the proms I went to, and although they thought they looked like hot sh*t, it looked terrible.
