It used to be providing for your family in the manner of your community and upbringing. It meant having a good and secure job and being a tax-paying, voting, upstanding, church-going citizen.
I think that has changed over the past 20 years to becoming wealthy at any cost (excuse the pun) and to attain a certain amount of power. People are far less secure in their jobs and personal lives than they were several years ago. Many are in debt up to their ears just to maintain the middle-class standard of living that they grew up with. I think most people believe that having money will solve any problems in life and so that becomes the primary focus instead of doing well at work, raising good healthy children, their marriage, etc.. We are fundamentally more selfish as well and tend to put our personal needs ahead of those of the community and even those of our immediate family. Power is also something that we all try to attain for ourselves these days. We want autonomy at work and the ability to be the one making the decisions. A lot of us grew up with the idea that in order to be successful in life, we must be our own boss, own our own company and not be "under someone else's thumb" as far as job security.

The traditional American Dream has been shattered as our society continues to fragment, the gap between the richest and poorest widens and our economy, influence & power in the world begins an accerlerated slide.

There is no one American dream. The closest is a safe, secure home with affordable healthcare and the ability to purcahse or produce enough food to comfortably survive.
