The Mississippi begins in the northern part of the state of Minnesota, which is among the coldest areas in the country. As such, it freezes in the winter. Some thaws occur so rapidly that they create flooding due to the massive amount of flowing water. This can be compunded by free flows of ice becoming jammed, creating a dam effect.
