I read about it in the fiction books I read but have not met anyone who has. How old were you? For how long were you away from home? Where did you go? How was the experience? Did it change things for you ?

Yep.....ran away a number of times. Got caught every time. That was in the sixties and it was very difficult to stay away as a runaway, particularly when you were a tweenie. Finally I got away when I hit sixteen and I had a very rough time of it. Menial jobs, wandering, dirty hostels, hostile preditors, and hunger. Eventually I did get on my feet and at the present time I have a college education and a good home. A good talent and time to work for myself. Running away from home was not a good thing but it happened and I still run away from some things but I'm learning to confront a lot without running away anymore.

I never ACTUALLY intended to leave permanently, but i did used to go places without telling anyone. I did this at least 3 times as a kid. The first time i was about 3 or so, and having been to a party the night before, i wanted to go back the following day as i assumed the party was still going lol. SO i just wandered off, and well, i didnt know the way and my siblings all went out looking for me until very late at night... they all thought i was a gonner. Anyway i turned up, cant remember if someone brought me home or not. The second time i remember wandering off was when i was about 5 or six and i had an argument with a girl i was playing with so i decided to go out for a walk.. The final time I was about 7 and this boy from school invited me to his house. I went with my brother, but there was no-one to bring me home until the boy's dad got home late at night. ANd i didnt know my address anyway, and we didnt have a phone at home back then. By then my whole family were frantic because this time both me and my little brother had gone missing. I dont remember how i got home this time, but i got beaten by my dad, and that put paid to my travels lol

I ran away when I was 14 and joined a carnival. it was the best time of my life. i met my wife there.I worked for that carnival for 16 years at which time i settled in greensboro north carolina. where i now own a stable and and am a blacksmith. so you see running away could be the best thing you could ever do. by the way when i was with the carnival I ran about ten different rides. when i left in 1999 i was making 1000.oo a week . not bad for someone who only went to fifth garade. if you are thinking about running away i say go for it and good luck

Yeah, its a funny story actually. I was about nine, and it was during the middle of the summer-when im out all day playing with my friends in my neighborhood. I packed a napsack, and headed down to a local creek, and stayed their for a few hours until i got hungry, and ran out of candy. So, feeling dejected, I walked back home and ran into my mom in the kitchen. She turned to me, and expecting scolding, I instead heard,

"Do you want some lunch sweetie?"

She hadn't even noticed I was gone.

I tried to when I was about 6 or 7. I told my parents I was leaving and I hated everything, etc, etc. I can't even remember why I was angry, but anyway, as I went upstairs to pack my things, my mom followed behind me. She started to take my clothes out of my closet and I asked her what she was doing. She just calmly replied, "Oh I figured I would help you pack". As soon as she said that I started to cry...haha. So I didn't get very far with it!
