Processor - the head of all, who could be called as brain also, this is where the calculations take place, and this element is the most important of a computer.
motherboard - the mainboard, which connects all your other boards on its slots which are PCiexpress, PCI, AGP and components and controls them, also such devices like CDroms and HDD on a IDE , and SATA which controls HDD, and many ports such as Parallel for printer , and PS2 for keyboard and mouse.
Memory - secondly to the processor, this is another major device who handles your application data temporarily between ur Storage device and processor, which results in faster performance, the more memory you have, the more you multitask.
Hard Disk Drive - your operating system installs here and your music and data collections get saved in this device, you could always upgrade this unit or add another unit for your existing one to bring you more storage.
fifth - depending on your motherboards intergrated capabilities, you might beed a Video Card and/or a Sound Card too, or both of them, if u chose a motherboard with intergrated sound and video then you don't have this fifth hardware requirement in here.
remember PC is always abt upgrading, and when you need more performance as a gamer or so you could always buy a top notch Graphic Card and rock and roll. unless you need it really its not gonna be a important component listed on top 5 hardware u need.
Power supply - without a powersuply therez nothing on your computer that are gonna light up and shine, you need the right amount of power and amps depending on your hardware requirements, this reallly would be my fifth hardware if graphics and sound were intergrated into motherboard.
hope my answer helped, good luck
