I have a Toshiba DVD recorder and I need a lesson in buying the right disc. DVD-RAM? DVD-R? DVD+R? Also, are these the same discs used to record data on pc's?

Look closely at your manual - it will tell you what types of DVD's to use. The Toshiba DVD recorder I have uses DVD - R and DVD - RW disks to record on. DVD - R's are one time recording media. DVD - RW disks can be erased and recorded again.

DVD + R and DVD + RW disks are made differently and DO NOT work in recorders that only take DVD - R and DVD - RW disks. There are recorders that take both types but only if the manual says they do.

DVD - R and DVD - RW can be used to record data on a PC with a DVD recordable drive.
