Gene Wilder was amazing and the original film will remain a classic and great film always. It reminds me of childhood and how I wanted one of those golden tickets!!! However, I love the remake and not just because Jonny Depp is gorgeous! The remake adds a whole new level to the story, you see an evil side to Willy Wonka, a dark side!

I love both versions of Willy Wonka. But personally I think Johnny Depp got the character more like the book then Gene Wilder. And the newer version is more to the book the older version, even the songs that the Oompa Lompa's sing after the kids get whats coming to them is exactly to the book. And visually the new one is how I saw the Wonka Factory.
The next book to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator another great book.

The original. I couldnt wait to see the one with Johnny Depp, but when I did, I was disappointed. Gene Wilder did an amazing job, so with Depps background, like Benny and Joon, if written more comical than the way Burton did it, he would have made the better Wonka.

Has to Be Gene Wilder! Jonny was good, closer to the book but Gene Wilder created Willy Wonka!
Just for the recored prefered the Umpa Lumpas from the first film too...... if fact i prefered all the original characters!
But still enjoyed the new film.

Both have their merits and should be viewed seperately not side by side. The Gene wilder version is fantastic and will always hold a special place for me as a childhood memory. However i also love the Johnny Depp version and think he does a fantastic take on the twisted character of Willy Wonka. In short Willy Wonka rules....he's just such a great character.

The Depp one. There was something a little sinister about the character in the books and Depp captures this better than Wilder. The Burton film is more like the book too (though the dad for a dentist back-story was an unnecessary addition).

Definately the original! I loved Gene Wilder. Johnny Depp is a great actor, but he just didn't pull this one off for me! O and the oompa loompas in the first one were way better too!

This is a no brainer! The original version with Gene Wilder. The film was amusing, suitable for children, entertaining, and stuck very close to the book. My daughter tells me that they used squirrels in the book and in the first film they used geese, I think I'm gonna have to go back and read the book again.

The new one, with Johnny Depp. The man is amazing. But that's besides the point. Freddie Highmore is adorable and makes a much better Charlie. This movie followed the book more closely and was just a superior film.
Come on. It's Tim Burton. Of course, it's a superior film.
