I am a pharmacology student and I have to kill and harm animals for scientific purposes. If you have done that, how could you get used to that? Of course I understand WHY i have to do that, but still my voice of conscience is telling me that I shouldn't be the one who decides who's life is more important - mine or the rat's. So, how can you get over it?

Animals and humans are EQUAL. The only difference is that they don't speak our language and we can overpower them. Does that give us the right to do so?
I used to have to kill animals at a Humane Society because we didn't have enough funding or space, and I did get used to it by calling it selective breeding. In nature the smartest, healthiest critter gets to reproduce and the slowest one gets eaten, but in our world only the nicest, prettiest survive. Experimentation on animals is a little different. For all we know we're harming the species by eliminating members with the best genes that never get passed on!
If you still have a bad feeling about harming others that's called having morals, and perhaps you should find another career path. But if pharmacology is more important to you, you'll have to decide for yourself what kind of impact you want to make on this world, not just our species. It is a tough issue to resolve. But in the end I chose to say no, unless it is absolutely necessary.

Most of us DO NOT get used to it. And I believe (at least, I hope) that is how it is supposed to be.

Animals are sometimes sacrificed so that we can learn more about how to make life better for humans and other animals.

The trick is to only do it when it is absolutely necessary. There are people who are working on ways to make new discoveries with ways that cause less animals to suffer.

There is a problem when too many people simply shrug and say: That's the way we've always done it and I'm not about to change.

I personally would never harm or hurt an animal, so you have to do what you think is right. If you really like this job which includes harming critters, then be my guest.

a girlfriend of mine does that in this animal lab.. she mostly has mice and rats. they do things like cut the heads open to slice the brains eww, i just can't do that. there use to be chimpanzees and felt so sorry for them .. all i could do was give them candy sometimes to make them happy..its so sad. but i understand why they do it.. just don't ask me to do it.

I believe the killing of animals for science is worthwhile. I, however, would not want to do it myself for the reasons that you have stated. Could I get used to it? I probably could but I don't really want to.

That voice you hear, its one of guilt. Their are alternatives. I would encourage you to seek those alternatives. No one has the right to take a life, unless they are taking lives. So I hate to see you on my list.

It is better than killing humans for scientific research.
