Factoring trinomials.

The procedure is the same for for x² and x³

First see if there are any common factors

x² + bx + c . . . .as an example

x² = a

bx = b

c = c

- - - - - - - -

If c is positive, the fators are going to have the same sign depending on b's sign

if c is negative, the factors are going to have the opposite sign depending on b's sign

In a trinomial use the Greatest common factor

When trying to solve c and b ask what greatest common factor gives a product fot c and gives a sum for b

Insert the sum and product inside the parenthesis.

be sure to FOIL to insure it works
