Its an article about China shooting down a sattelite in space. I would say that China is technically sophisticated to do that.

The US condemned it and said that it will take space weapon programs very seriously.

Why do you think that the US would respond like this?

Who has the most sattelites in orbit? The USA.

Who would suffer the most from sattelites being shot down? The USA.

This "test" China did was clearly a muscle-flex at the USA. The USA had two options, back down or not back down. We chose the latter.

Well lets see, maybe because China's human rights record is right behind Stalin, Hitler, and Pol Pot. Do you really think if China had a weapon that no one could stop they would be happy making cheap radios for the western world? Taiwan would be? Maybe ole Ronnie Reagan knew what he was doing starting that star wars program after all!

Because we have more satellites up there than anybody else. Mostly communications and weather satellites. If China starts knocking them down, it would cause great turmoil to our everyday life. That would be a perfect prelude to some aggressive move by China.

That is why the US responded that way. It is a threat to our national interests.

The US doesn't want China to shoot down US satellites. Satellites are used for war purposes, so they seem like legitimate targets to me. Therefore, the US wants to do its most to protect its military assets in the event of a future conflict between US and China. I suggest the US start developing similar tech if they have not already.

Because they recognise that if they can use this technology albeit for practical reasons it also could be done aggressively. There is lots of scary stuff out there and I just hope that those people in power who make decisions lead happy balanced lives and don't have a bad day, bad enough to make them lose their perspective and do the unthinkable. So important that people choose their leaders carefully. Unfortunately power corrupts so even if you vote for somebody that seems okay they could change.

Because the current administration can only see things from their limited point of view. Diplomacy and foreigner relations are not embraced by the Bush administration, they would rather start wars. They do not see war as a failure of diplomacy. The fact is, they aren't very good at conducting wars either.

Bill Clinton gave China the technology to do it for campaign donations from the Chinese.
Now, it's coming back to haunt us.
