Everyone has missed the most practical import of stars to the ancients...navigation and the tracking of time and seasons.

Plain and simple, because they were mysterious and in trying to explain the heavens, ancients came up with all kinds of ideas about the stars, some merely poetic (heavenly spheres), some useful (positions of constellations indicating planting and harvest times), and others completely harebrained (astrology).

Stars were believed to be representations of animals, people and objects. The position of the planets were used to construct horoscopes to predict the future.

Stars were also used for navigation and to track the seasons.

They didn't have cable TV or the internet to keep them busy at night so they observed the sky and made up tales and folklore about them. After constant observation, they noticed certain stellar landmarks that told them when to plant crops etc.
