Because they're dark-skinned. I'm Native American and many Italian people are darker than I am. It only makes sense that some would ask. Even I asked it once. You have to realize that in the US, ethnicity is everything. Where you are, it's religion that's everything. Every country has some way to discriminate, they just do it differently. I read "La Repubblica" and other Italian-language news every day (I won't answer in Italian because my answer would be pulled in an English-only forum) and Italy is just as bigoted, mostly toward Muslims these days.

COuld you maybe clarify the question? I understand the point you are making, but I'm not sure what kind of answers you are seeking. Is this about democracy or whether Italians are white? Not trying to be rude, I'm just slighly confused by the question.
