Hi, Jenny
I'm of recent Irish descent(My Da's parents and my Mom were born there)- I can kind of relate, since I hear what you're saying from all my cousins. A few years ago, someone said-and I'm quoting word for word, "If I hear one more Yank tell me that his great-grandma came from Kerry, I'll puke!"
There is a certain mystique about the Irish. As I'm sure you're aware, the great waves of Irish emigration to the US were 150+ years ago. So to many of us American Irish(or Irish-Americans), the Irish heritage is limited to a few copies of old tintype photographs and a name or two on the family tree. I'm from the Boston area, and I dont' think that there's another area of the US that's been more influenced by the Irish(BTW, St. Patricks Day in Massachusetts is also known as Evacuation Day, since it was on March 17, 1777 that George Washington's troops forced the British army out of Boston). I'm really convinced that Yanks see their 'long-lost cousins' when they meet an Irish person. Anyway, I hope that helps answer a few things...
Slan,
Seamus

Half Irish myself, and I know that most consider themselves the same people. We aren't all that mixed though---I'm half Eastern Cherokee and half Irish, not all of us are that hodgepodge. Most people from Ireland found it odd that I was half Irish but looked so Native (until the Manic Panic that is)

it is because many of us are irish, and many of us who are irish have ancestors that got off the boat not to long ago, in the 1900's or so, many of us still practice irish traditions or superstitions that have been passed down to us, my mother side is irish and many of them are red heads with blue eyes, they cook very irish, its ancestry passed down, you might remind many people about their ancestry?
