They didn't have plastics, and the wire needs to be coated with an insulator, or short circuits occur, and calico was suitable, reasonably priced and readily available (he could have used silk).

The calico cloth was an insulator. Gingham, broadcloth, denim, paper or rubber would have worked too.

because calico cloth is ferromagnetic we can also use soft iron instead of it
