You can love to cook, but that doesn't make you Julia Childs or Wolfgang Puck. A good bartender not only knows the ingredients, but knows the right amount of what to make it tase good. Too much Vermouth in a martini can ruin it. Too little vodka in a White Russian drowns out the kahluha taste. Do you squeeze a lemon twist over scotch or do you just drop it in? You don't need a lot of rum to make it strong, just use a little less pop.
A good bartender knows their regular customers well. They know what they drink, how they drink it, how many they usually will have, whether they like to talk or not. As soon as you see them come in the door you start making their drink and give it to them before they ask for it, lights their smokes for them (in bars that still alllow smoking).
A good bartender knows how to take of their waitresses, knows who to take good care of and when to cut someone off.
There's more to it than slinging a few drinks and flipping shaker tins in the air, and dancing on the bar. That's all show and it looks nice, but that's not what makes a good bartender.
