It doesnt seem to let me play under his membership but it seems unfair paying £40 for each person playing on the same console.

I do sometimes play as his guest (split screen) but want to get my own points and have my own name! Not blinking paying another £40 though!!

you can play as his guest providing you are playing on the same console i.e split-screen

Yeah, you have to pay per gamertag. Each gamertag is setup with its own accounts. My wife and I wondered the same thing, but found out that gold memberships is per gamertag, not per xbox 360. You will also notice that if you want to purchase points under one gamer tag, the other gamertag won't have access to those points. You would have to log on as the person that purchased the points to use them. You can find reduced cost 12 month gold subscriptions on ebay for under £30 sometimes, if you really want to get one for each account this may be the cheaper route to follow.

Unfortunately this is how businesses run... It's just a cheap tactic. They are hoping you will either pay for a new subscription or "even" a new console!
