Jay Silverheels. He can also be seen as a younger man, in the film, KEY LARGO (1948) starring Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Edward G. Robinson, and Lionel Barrymore. He played a Seminole Indian.
Later in Life, he was featured in TV commercials for Jeep SCOUT, back when they were made by International Harvester. The slogan for the Jeep Scout was "GETTUM UP SCOUT", which was the exact phrase Tonto used when talking to his horse, "Scout" in the Lone Ranger series of the 1950's.

In the TV series Tonto was played by, Jay Silverheals. A First Nations citizen from, I believe the Brantford, Ontario reserve. That's in Canada, about an hour west of Toronto.
