I am orig owner of '99 mercedes e320. Replaced driverside window regulator last year. Now passengerside window off-track. Told regulator needs to be replaced. Did I miss a mercedes recall or is anyone aware of service bulletin addressing problem. I am assuming this to be a factory defect. Never had to replace window regulator on any of numerous previous brand autos owned... Thanks for any offered help. jim

Good luck, these things break often. No bulletins or recalls on this problem. Should cost you about $125.00 in parts, don't know about labor, but it involves taking off the door panel, so figure at least 2-3 hours in labor. I have a friend who works for a MBZ dealer and he's told me that they tell their technicians when moving these cars not to roll any windows down on because of the possibility that the regulator will break and they'll be stuck with the bill.

I too own a '99 E320 (Wagon 4Matic). Three out of 4 window regulators have failed on it within the last 16 months.

The problem is that there are plastic parts that make up the window regulator and these parts get brittle with age. The problem seems to be worse with cars that are parked in the sun.

For what it's worth, I've had the same problem on a '92 Mitsubishi 3000GT when that car was about 11 years old, and a '89 Acura Legend when it was about 7 years old.

As an interesting side note, there is a company that is now making an ALL-plastic window regulator (see the DesignNews article below) for use in new car designs. The article notes that these regulators will be used primarily for the back windows (rated for 15,000 cycles) because they are not durable enough for front-window use (25,000 cycles).

Other than getting it fixed I would not worry to much about this problem. It is one of if not the most common problems with that model. I have personally fixed dozens of them. The cables often break or plastic guides break. Hopefully thats the worst problem you'll have. P.S Always use dealer parts! They have one year/12,000 mile part and labor warranty.

This is a common problem with these cars. You may have some luck with the dealer, but probably not.
