The most important thing take a magic marker and label the location you want the box to go. Bedroom, Kitchen etc.

Don't pack the boxes too heavy. If you have a lot of books fill the box half full and put something lighter that winds up in the same room on top.

Use lots of wadded newspaper to protect breakables.

I do agree with all the other answers of marking your boxes to each room but also a bit more information like( vases, flower pots, pictures,) things like that have helped me. Also as a woman I find it easier to pack a suitcase or two of clothes I will need in the coming weeks until everything is organized-don't forget the shoes. Pack your refrigerator last and put your freezer food in plastic bags before you pack them so the condensation doesn't weaken the bottom of your boxes. Good luck. One last thing if friends are helping you always have a couple more on reserve.just in case someone is a no show last minute.

I find marking my boxes with numbers and having a sheet with the numbers and their contents listed works great. That way you don't have to go through every box to find something. Also, you can color code boxes according to what room they need to be placed in when you arrive at your new place. Oh, now packing books? Go easy, they are a heck of a lot heavier after moving tons of boxes. You can use a laundry basket for those too. Get boxes that have cut outs for your hands, makes life easier. You can buy some from Staples if you want to spend some extra cash. You have to put them together (easy) and they have covers and hand cut outs.

I always like to use the same size boxes if possible. It makes loading and stacking much, much easier. And you get a tighter load which Will keep things from breaking.
