I bought a laptop about a month ago on E-bay and it was working fine. The battery didn't hold much of a charge but it came with the ac/dc adaptor to plug it in so it was fine. Now, when I plug in the adaptor, it is still running off of the battery. I checked the adaptor and the light is on to indicate that it is plugged in and on so I'm assuming the problem is in the laptop where the adaptor plugs in. Is there anything that can be done about that? Do I have to have the adaptor to charge the battery? Thanks!

I just had the same problem with a new Dell laptop.

Replace the adapter and see if that works.

If it is the charger portion of the computer it is a very expensive fix.

Good luck

To check if your AC adaptor works here's what you do:

1. Remove battery
2. Plug adaptor to laptop
3. Turn on laptop. If laptop turns on then it's working fine. If it doesn't, your adaptor is no good.

To check if battery is good, here's what you do:

1. Insert battery and plug in adaptor.
2. Charge battery until it shows that it's fully charged.
3. Remove adaptor.
4. Turn on computer and check how long it runs on battery. If it doesn't last long (about 1 hour minimum), then you need to buy a new battery. Remember, there's different types of ratings for battery life. Check the manual for battery life. Some are made to last 1-2 hrs, others more (mine are for 6hrs, but because I've used it for a while they only hold 3 hrs). Why? because rechargeable batteries degrade. I can go on but that's another topic...

to charge a laptop battery you have to plug in your laptop to the power outlet (use adaptor), just like you charge your mobile phone. if you do this but the battery is not fully charged, the battery itself might not be in a good condition. you have to replace it or refill it. you can check how your battery perform (fully recharge or not) by clicking "power management".
the adaptor itself can be broken if it is suddenly off while you are working without battery. but i think it is not your problem here.
