It is best just to backup your email and contact in Outlook, so go to File->Import & Export. Choose "Export to a file" then choose "Personal Folder File (.pst)". To make sure you get everything...if that's what you want to backup, next highlight the "Personal Folders" text to choose the entire Outlook profile and checkmark the box labeled "Include Subfolders". Choose a location to save this exported file (external drive, etc, because this file may be rather large) and when you have formated your drive, go back into Outlook, File->Import & Export and choose "Import from another program or file", choose "Personal Folder File (.pst)" and follow the instructions.
You should be good from there!
Be prepared on both objectives to wait a bit, depending on your computer's speed and the size of your email files. Sometimes this can take a while!

All your emails are stored on the outlook server, not in your computer. Yahoo, Hotmail, they are all the same. Reformatting your hard drive will not effect any email. Now is you have some pictures saved on your computer from a email and you have deleted that email, that will be lost.

Easiest solution is to simply move the emails you want to a folder elsewhere....otherwise you can search for the outlook files and have them all displayed for you, then you can pick and choose which to save, you can also export your address book and emails elsewhere.
the file types to look for are
OUTLOOK.PST - file contains "Outlook Today" folders.
*.PST files - other "personal folders" (e.g., archive.pst)
*.OST files - Offline Storage files
*.OAB files - Offline Address Books
*.OFT files - Outlook Forms Templates
*.PAB file - personal address books
*.FAV - Outlook bar settings
OUTCMD.DAT - your personal customizations
*.NICK - nicknames files
*.RWZ - rules wizard files
*.VCF - Virtual Business Card files
and email files are .eml or .email

By default they are located in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook - but if I were you, I would just backup the documents and settings folder and restore it after you redo the PC (and install outlook)

Look here
Tools -> Options -> [Mail Setup] -> Data files ->
YOu may see one or more "Names" there with a column called "Filename". Note those files. Go to that location and save them all.
