while I do not condone smoking while pregnant, I will share my story. First my mother smoked with both my sister & I and we were fine. I smoked during both my pregnancies, I did cut down, just couldn't quite quit. Both my boys were 8lbs 6oz, one was 21 1/2" long and the other was 19 3/4" long. They are both healthy, no allergies, no withdrawal as someone said, nothing. They are 9 & 7 now. I do wish I hadn't smoked, you never know what may come up in the future, but I did and both my boys are fine. Like I said, I am not advocating smoking, just giving my story. People who say smokers are unfit, or other nasty snide comments, don't know how hard it is to quit cold turkey and possibly never smoked. If you are a smoker and can quit, by all means do so. If you find it hard, cut down little by little. Every little bit helps !!

Sorry about how well that 'I don't want to hear any preaching' went over...
Not really a story, but: I'm curious as to why it took people so long to figure out smoking while pregnant was a bad idea, and why it became such a horribly bad idea so quickly.
Anytime anybody mentions it here, there's a lot of "oooh, it's CHILD ABUSE," and a fair bit of "I dunno. My mom smoked and I'm fine." If it's so reliable a cause of poor pregnancy outcomes, why did it take so long to notice as much? My grandmother, who was married to a doctor (a specialist in -- I am not making this up -- respiratory problems of newborns), smoked, and I'm not aware of it even being a worry at the time.

I couldn't completely quit smoking when I was pregnant. I wish I could have because I did go into premature labor. My son was born 5 weeks early he weighed 6 lbs 9 oz and was 18 inches long. Thank goodness he wasn't really small. My milk didn't come in for a couple weeks after I had him, so had to bottle feed. We are now on our 3rd formula because he has reflux and spit/threw up everything we fed him. He is doing fine though and gaining weight, and 5 weeks old today! Oh and for anyone saying people are stupid, crazy ect for smoking while pregnant obviously have never had an addiction. Everyone is different when it comes to addictions.

Smoking while pregnant can cause lower birth weight babies. If you need a Cesarean you are at a much higher risk for developing blood clots, which can kill you, not to mention the already higher risk from the smokes.
If you smoke around your baby he/she will have more ear infections than if you didn't, higher rates of asthma, and other respiratory illnessnes.

Besides the previously mentioned low birth weight and possible death from complications, the babies usually end up with respiratory problems for life. Asthma is the big one. Before you think that asthma isn't so bad, realize that you would have to miss work to take the baby/child to the doctors for flare-ups. Also, as a pediatric intensive care nurse, I took care of way too many kids that had an asthma attack and couldn't breathe. I did have one that ended up dying because her's was so bad that just smelling the smoke on her dad's clothes sent her overboard.
And to shorty, saying that people who say that smoking is bad and all that never having an addiction. You are so far wrong it's pathetic. I smoked a pack a day and when I found out I was preganant the last two times, I quit cold turkey. Yes, I get cravings, but I know that one of the best things I can ever do for my baby is to quit.
Good luck and best wishes.

A woman I work with refused to quit smoking while pregnant during both of her pregnancies. Both children were low birth weight, the older has learning disorders. Both suffered through severe acid reflux.

No particular story, but smoking will affect both the mother & the baby...
Babies tend to (shrink) in size while before they are born...
Better to avoid smoking completely during Pregnancy...

When I was preg w/my daughter, I smoked, and she only weighed 4 lbs 15 oz. She was fine after the miconium (pooped in sack), had to revive her 4 times. Then 2 yrs ago I had a boy and he got wrapped in cord and didn't make it, I smoked then too. But I really didn't take care of myself w/him. Too much drama going on in my life at the time.

Well, low birth weight, premature birth, and there's death.
Also, Baby's who are born to smoking mothers go through a withdrawal like a crack baby after their born.
