I read recently that the Russian spy guy Litvenenko was buried in a lead lined coffin. I thought perhaps this was to block radiation, but Princess Diana was also buried in a lead lined coffin, and she wasnt glowing in the dark at the time. Anyone know what the purpose of this practice is?

Alot of coffins made today either have lead or metal. But the reason why is because it preserves the body for a longer period of time. Another reason to use lead coffins is just incase they want to exhume the body at another date such as the people you mentioned above there decomposition level is at a slower rate.

It prevents seepage in to environment, it was specially relevant due to the massive level of polodium (dont know the correct spelling) that HIGHLY radioactive and the levels in his body would cause huge damage to the environment. I believe this was also why he couldn't be cremated. The levels used were in search amounts would've cost £100,000,000+ because its so rare and difficult to produce which was the reason Russian Government were involved as no ordinary assassin could afford this so it had to be a state sponsored hit and Russia had the most reason to silence him...

My dad always used to say Clark Gable was buried in lead coffin. Everytime the guy was on TV he'd say it! I just thought it ment you were rich or important. I think nothing gets in. It's sealed forever. When pall bearers carry it you can tell its lead cos it looks so much heavier. Hope this helps explain.
