It increases the "workspace" area for your computer. This allows it to operate faster, because it has more area to store things temporarily without having to write to the pagefile.

The page file is where information is stored on the hard disk. The hard disk does not operate as fast as the memory modules.

When the memory becomes full, due to reserved address spaces in memory, the Operating System is forced to use the slower pagefile. Having more RAM means this occurs less often, and your computer operates faster, and more efficiently.

RAM is where data is temporarily stored while it is being processed by the CPU. This is a faster storage area and reduces the time to fetch the data from the hard disk that is mechanical in nature.

However, unless you were using all your memory before, you may not see too much of difference in the performance. For normal day to day operations, 256 MB is more than sufficient.

If your applications use more than 256 MB and if have only 256 MB, then your computer will slow down as it will use the virtual memory taken out of hard drive. You can clearly see the performance degradation in that situation. In that case if you increase the memory to 512 MB, you will see noticeable difference in the performance.

Increasing ram can help the computer run faster. When you run out of ram, the computer uses the harddrive as memory, that slows the computer down. Windows XP alone can use 300mb of ram. Add an antivirus program, and other programs loaded at start up, it can add up to more. Then running programs and/or games takes even more memory.
For win XP recommended is 1GB of ram. For Win98/ME, about 512mb of ram. For Vista, it will need around 2gb of ram. The increase in speed not using the harddrive as memory is around 10-20% faster.
