I was told it was because my heater is new, but how long does it take to go away. Will airing out the room help(Unfortunetly, what is the point of having a heater if I just let all the heat out lol!) I don't have a sensitive nose as it is lol. I tried burning candles, does that help?

What you are smelling is the oil (smells kinda like and overheated engine)that the manufacturer left on the heat exchanger intentionally to prevent rust. It should burn off in less than an hour for sure. Also there could be sealant (Smell kinda like vinegar)used by the installer that is curing, maybe for one day, but they are not supposed to use stinky stuff.
Any more than that could be problem of some sort, Dead rodent in system, or something too close to heat exchanger, or wet insulation, which has a slightly fishy odor
Or, worst case a gas leak, which has an onion fragrance

Airing the room out is probably the best bet as it will change the air in the room and make the heater work harder and thus break in over a shorter period of time.

Turn the hot water on and let it run until the smell goes away. We have the same problem in our camper and that helps.
