Hi,
I want your opinion on something.
I am currently saving for a $6000 camera, I am 14 & working part-time.
The reason I want such an expensive video camera is so that it will produce professional video so I can re-sell individual clips as stock footage on the internet.
If you don't really get what I mean here are a few websites doing the same thing...
http://www.gothidef.com/
http://www.gotfootagehd.com/gf/store/node/home
So do you think I can make money selling a few clips in a pack on the internet on a website that I would make up.
I think I would only be selling to Australians as I will be filming in PAL format.
So I want other peoples opinions that know a little more about business than I do.
I have been interested in filming for 6 years now..
Please help me out as I want to know if this is just a waste of money me saving for.
thanks,

I am not sure that people are getting my question, I am asking is it worth doing (will I make money out of it?), if not then I'll go for one that is 4 grand cheaper. I for sure would so love the 6k one, but if I'm not going to be making the money back & having to pay back for ages then it isn't really worth it...

If you have a dream and a passion consider yourself one of the lucky. Go for it. If it doesn't work exactly the way you want then you can make adjustments. What a great time to know what you like. Do not wait for anyone's approval except your own. DO IT.
In answer to your "additional details. I have a question. Is the fact you have decided you may purchase a cheaper camera have anything to do with compromising your level of committement? Successful people do not compromise anything. If they fail, they learn and adjust.

It's not a waste of money if you love filming and you intend to pursue this as a hobby or maybe a career one day. By all means, buy it, and have fun with it... make short films and maybe become a famous director some day.
But in the short term it is not realistic that you will make much on that investment in the short to medium term, unless you are extremely assertive in approaching potential clients and making cold calls and maybe already have a few ideas about who you're going to sell the footage to.
Perhaps you could try finding a client, and then hiring a camera to produce the footage and see how it works out. If you prove that you can produce income, then you can justify such a large investment in your own camera.
My advice would be to buy the camera because you want to make movies, but don't buy it to make money. Kudos to you for thinking business so young.

You have a good idea. BUT, you have to remember: there are four ways to making money: a job, investing, a business, and intellectual property (books, music, VIDEOS).
You're creating intellectual property with this. It's a business, yes, but it's MOSTLY intellectual property. And the thing about intellectual property is that it is not consistenly bought all the time. It's bought, but not consistently. So it's usually under the category of "I'll keep adding to this just so I can buy a nice dinner when the check arrives."
Don't expect millions of dollars, but it's a good thing to do.
Now...since you'll have such an expensive camera, and since you'll hopefully still have a job, you're in luck:
You can have a job (without much of the overtime you're putting right now, I hope)
You can have a business (taking footage with your camera of weddings or things of that nature. Believe me: people actually pay for this - or for football games and such...graduations, etc)
And you'll have a source of income based on intellectual property.
You have three things. You just have to put the work behind it...and maybe, if you market yourself properly, you can make a good return on your investment.
Good luck.

It's not a waste, but there are no guarantees. I use a lot of stock photography, but not stock video. I'm sure there is a market out there, you'll just need to find a unique perspective for your videos. Don't be like everyone else. You also might want to try to sell your video clips to large web design firms. Or you could package 10-12 video clips on a CD and sell the entire CD. I don't know...but good luck. I'm impressed with your ambition at such a young age.

If you enjoy what you do....or lets say you like takiing clips, then do it with all your heart...you will make it. If you want to do it ..because others are doing it....and its not your passion, then dont do it. I am also in business...but its affiliate programs...i have spent a lot of money but made little....however i love business and since i dont wan to manage no employees...thats what i like doing...so i will keep up spending the money until i make dig my gold. So if you like what you want to do ...you will succeed in it...."patience and peservierance are the base for success."
