What Americans do best: spend money. When the Americans first went to the Philippines, there were dollar signs in a lot of eyes. That gross injustices were also perpetrated I have no doubt. But on the whole, I think you gotta admit that money and the technological improvements it has provided are better than the limits of being an island culture in a low-technological state that inhabits a world in a much higher state of development.
Living on an island inevitably means that the real approach of culture has been by ship until recently, and now by air. So much of what we brought to the islands is the rest of the world, in the form of transportation and communication. Trade goods, too, of course. And books, ideas, educators, philosophers, artists, writers, and all the complexity of the modern world.
