Right now, chemical biology is attempting to answer that question--and it's doing a better and better job of doing so. One would have, presumably, started off with self-replicating proteins which would eventually have lead to changes in the atmospheric composition and the advent of the first strand of RNA. From there it was only a matter of time before the first hypercycle evolved, and then the first eukaryotes. The eukaryotes would be the masters of the planet for two billion years following their evolution.
Though some individuals claim that the theory of evolution is controversial, you should be aware that there is no more controversy in the scientific community over the validity of evolution than there is over the theory of universal gravitation. For ever scientist that doubts evolution, there are ten named STEVE who support it.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth
And God said, "Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky." So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground"

It depends on which theory you assume. If you assume the creation theory than god created adam and eve......
If you assume the evolution theory of charles darwin, we are continuously evolving from lower to higher beings. So life began first in the water, and after many years, the water creatures walked out of water and started inhabitating the land. Humans have evolved from apes. and so on.....

From small protien bags called amino acids. These join to form larger molecules. This resulted in organic evolution and at last came human beings.

The Almighty God created mountains, rivers, sun, moon, star, heaven, hell, earth, etc. But this things were lifeless as well as ugly. Then he felt of creating human to add beauty to his creation as well as to have somebody to worship him and his beloved Prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him). So he created Adam (Peace be upon him) from sand and water. Then to accompany him God created Eve [Hawa](Peace be upon her) from the rib of Adam. This is how life began on earth. And we came into existence.
