Basis? It is baised upon what the culture has deemed acceptable. Basis is a hard word to deal with morality because it is so old and burried under tradition and other things. It was originally baised upon religion, which was baised upon what was needed for a culture to survive.

I think that morality is NOT a man made control method, as suggested above. I think morality is NOT based on the bible (which even if you believe it is divinely inspired, is still a man-made book) I think morality is NOT entirely unique to every culture.
Instead of being made by man, I think morality is part of man. That is, it's in our mind, hearts, bodies, or soul somewhere in the blueprint of 'what is human'. Whether you prefer to believe it's encoded in our DNA or it's placed into us by God, I think the result is the same.
This morality that's instilled in us from before birth doesn't tell us what's right and what's wrong. It tells us instead how to know the difference between what's right and what's wrong.
That's why, I believe, moral values can vary to degrees from culture to culture. The same blueprint can yield different results when treated differently.
You start with two identical shirts. One is treated with flame retardent, and the other with with a waterproofing.
They have very different uses and applications, and are themselves quite different. They're still made of the same stuff.
That's how I think it is with morality. If you were born in Madagascar or New York, you know what's wrong... you always have.

Morality came from a need to relate to each other in a non-destructive way and to identify with a holy God. There were no morals just before Noah's flood (only evil in their hearts continually) and the ancient world was destroyed. Morality found it's ultimate expression in the 10 commandments, combining the spiritual contract of a holy God and the harmonious need of Man in one concise document.

The main basis for morality is laid down in Genesis 1-3. Man was made for a free fellowship with God. This had one requirement--obedience. Adam and Eve chose to disobey.
The next great statement, and the most precise basis for morality ever written is in Exodus, the Ten Commandments. This is written in a negative format--building a wall which defines the rules of our relationship with God and with our fellow men.
Christ, in the N.T. Matthew 5-8 parses the meaning of the law,
the basis of morality, and shows that it is not just outward behavior, but a matter of the inward heart.
He wraps it up in two short sentences: Love the Lord your God with all your mind, and strength, and soul, and love your neighbor in the same way in which you love yourself.
This basis for morality is what shows us our incapacity, because of sin, to fulfill the law (morals) and the necessity for the Saviour to achieve for us, a moral righteousness before God, which we cannot achieve for ourselves.

Morality originated in many places over a long period of time. One of the earliest examples is defending others, which originated out of the need for protection against predators. Since we were not always able to do this on our own, we started to make alliances which evolved into friendships.

The main basis for morality consists of two pillars and a foundation.
The foundation is human nature, and the two pillars are religion, and society.

A sense of appreciation for others and as well as for yourself.
Appreciation is something that everyone should have. It comes from within one self. If one don't even have the sense of appreciation, that person can always forget about getting into other stuffs. It's no use having empathy, sincerity and whatsoever if one simply don't have appreciation in them.

Morals are built from our society & most of them come from the Bible but one's ethics are designed by an individual who judges their behaviour based on the rules of the game they are thinking of & what they consider is acceptable to them.

Struggle for survival, mainly. Without morality and ethics, I don't think the species can survive for long.
