When the timer on the controller gives a run signal, the pump runs but there is no heat to the rads or hot water tank. The boiler hasn't lit because the pilot has gone out. I have gone through the "light the boiler pilot" instructions religiously and the pilot will light, yet when I slowly release the grey button after 30 seconds, the pilot light goes out right at the end of the grey button's travel. I have tried turning the grey buton to the right and releasing it as insructed, but when I try to light the pilot again after 3/4 minutes, the same thing happens. It's almost as if the grey button is being allowed to travel outwards just a fraction too far which is cutting off the gas supply to the pilot light. Can the grey button be adjusted or will it require a replacement? If not that, what else could it be? Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have a Baxi boiler and experienced the same problem so I know what I'm talking about. Most probably, the pilot light thermostat has developed a fault. You can get a replacement one from B&Q. The universal one which they sell will fit your Baxi. Note that you are required by law to use a qualified Corgi fitter to work on any gas appliances, but it may be difficult to get one out for a small job unless you are prepared to pay their asking price (hefty). When he arrives, he will remove the old thermostat by unscrewing the retaining screw on the front, and the one at the other end at the rear of the bolier. He will then simply fit the new one in the reverse order in which he removed the old one. He will be careful to avoid damaging the screw threads on the boiler. He will also make sure that the new thermostat coils are not kinked.
If he is thorough he will also check that the gas jet is clear by unscrewing the feed pipe of the gas jet, making sure that the washers are not damaged. If the jet is blocked, he will use a very thin wire to clear it. Making sure that no dust or debris is left in the jet, he will replace it and make sure that all joints are gas-tight.

More likely than not the thermocouple is duff. Inexpensive item - say £10 max. If the pilot light is poor and not impinging on the tip of the thermocouple then the problem is probably a blocked or restricted pilot injector, easy enough to replace with new....say £4 for the part Fitting of a new thermocouple should be done and dusted in 10 - 15 minutes, so don't get scammed !

Keep it simple because the fix is simple. See the 1/8 " diameter copper tubing that runs between the gas valve and the pilot liting area? That is called a thermocouple. It unscrews from the bottom of the gas valve, unscrewing it will not create a gas leak. Remove it and take it to a hardware store and get a replacement of the same length. Install the new thermocouple. Lite the pilot. You are now in service!

Its a safety thing
The grey button allows gas through to light the pilot light. This then heats up an element which allows gas through without holding the button, which is why you have to hold it down for a time.
if the pilot light gets blown out, the element cools and shuts off all the gas.
These elements can fail so as soon as you let go of the button the gas is shuts off.

Your fault with the pilot light is due to a worn Thermocouple. This is what the pilot light flame heats up. This is a device that allows the gas valve to open and let gas into the main burner. It has to be replaced which is not an expensive job. .

There is a thermocouple which senses the heat from the pilot light and keeps the gas valve open, if the pilot light goes out the signal from the thermocouple is "cold" and it shuts off the gas.

If the thermocouple fails, the system thinks the pilot light is out and shuts off the gas.

Therefore I think it is likely that your thermocouple has failed
