A socialist belives that that workers deservs their share of wealth in the economy. They oppose the agregation of inequible wealth by a few people who have little merit except their own self agrandisment. Unfortunately the Soviet Union came to be associated with "Socialism" and it had men , like the capitalists of the West who ripped off the system. The Command Economy failed. People didn't produce enough or it was misdirected. The Demand economy of the West is much influenced by the creation of false needs and values by education for domestcation and advertising. When the Demand Economy collapses (as it will do : no Bull markets lasts for ever) socialists believe that the resultant social and environmental tragedies will require socialist solutions.
Socialists are not liberals.

Socialism, in its' purest form is merely an economic principal that believes that equality is more important than individual power. Socialism has been the driving force of Christianity for 2000years and it is the basis of all charitable organizations. It is the distribution of goods and services to those that need, as they need them and avoiding the gathering of personal wealth and power.. The stock market is a form of socialism in fact. It is a gathering of capital from many different people/groups for the profit of the group as a whole. The difference is that in a capitalistic economy, shares are distributed according to shares owned.

A socialist is a person who believes in/subscribes to socialism.

"Socialism refers to a broad array of doctrines or political movements that envisage an egalitarian socio-economic system in which property and the distribution of wealth are subject to social control. This control may be exercised either directly through popular collectives such as workers' councils or indirectly on behalf of the people by the state. As an economic system, socialism is characterized by state, community or worker ownership of the means of production. The primary concerns of socialism are social equality and an equitable distribution of wealth that would serve the interests of society as a whole."
