Johnny Cash is one of those stars who always seem to be there but are not really appreciated until they are dead.
He is an Icon because his music relates to peoples lives. for example his famous song 'ring of fire' is not about curries but about the pain of lost love.
'love is a burning thing
and it makes a fiery ring
bound by wild desire
I fell into a ring of fire
The taste of love is sweet
when hearts like ours meet
I fell for you like a child
oh but the fire went wild'
He had an affinity with the lost, dispossessed and especially prisoners, and his first hit 'fulsome prison' had a line
'I shot a man in Reno
Just too watch him die'
Which so called gangsta artists would shy away from even today.
His career had a late flurry when he recorded some modern songs which he showcased at the famous Voodoo Lounge in LA. he took the place by storm, and was dragged back onto the stage to sing many of his famous hits with all the cool and trendy rockers singing along.
Hurt as written by the nine inch nails is a story of self harm, but when Johnny Cash sang it, it becomes a song about looking back on your life and regretting the people you have hurt. Recorded not long before his death it is a performance which perfectly mirrors his life, his addictions, his divorces, and his regrets.

the nine inch nails song was called 'hurt' of their 'Downward Spiral' album, i think people related to JC's version because his wife had just died and he was really sad in the video, personally i prefer the original. Any way he's such an icon because he, wrote great songs, led a great life and more importantly was just extremely cool

Johnny Cash was before my time, but as I got older I appreciated him. I grew up listening to him from my folks. I found out later that all his songs were written from life stories, his own and others. Johnny suffered many things, addiction, cheating on his wife, etc. He took things to extreme. He was a passionate man so the best answer I could give you would be, write from the heart, use your life, or others that have affected yours. things you saw or heard that affected you. I was in nursing, and teaching for a while, but my heart was always to write. That is what I do now but it is in the book form. I am writing on true life experiences, mine and others. I go to a quiet place in the house usually alone, and then a quiet place in my mind. The best advice I have ever gotten was just let it flow. Wow did that ever work, I just started writing and it came to me. My book will be out soon. Won't give my name but the title can't miss. "A time to tell."

the song hurt is (as far as i can tell) about self mutilation, ie intentional pain to mask the unintentional.
