Democracy has become not a popularity contest, but a contest of voter greed. The candidate that promises to give the most to the voters is the one who usually wins. Of course, government can only take. It can never give. But what candidate would ever say that?

Exactly. In this increasingly superficial, empty, and shallow society, people (voters in particular) respond to a candidate's personality, looks, and general disposition. How many people really know where Clinton, Obama, or McCain stand on actual issues? This was particularly noticeable in the 2000 Presidential election. People responded more to Bush's folksy, supposedly down to earth personality and were more averse to Gore's intellectual, robotic disposition.

a democratic system has been established only because that was in the interest of the political group in a given country.

In another country, dictatorship has been established for the same reason.

If Bush was able to establish a dictatorship, dont u think he would do it straight away? he did it in some way though...
