Are you sure that this shouldn't be the other way round. that is
" Whst name is given to words that sound the same but are spelled differently ? "
Answer = homophones
For example : wear / where rwo / to eight / ate

It is called a heteronym, from Greek heteros = different, and it is sometimes called a heterophone (= diffferent sound). Examples are quite rare - so far, we have minute, read, desert, polish, and live.

When the spelling and pronunciation are both the same, but there are different meanings, it is called a homonym, from Greek homos = same. My favourite is "pink". It is a colour, a way that a car engine works badly, a fishing boat, a jab with the point of a sword, and so on. There are lots of examples.
