Great football player means having good attitude towards the game, having respect for the opposite players and playing good even if you don't got skills (or if you got skils). Kaka / Brazil / 2002- Pele / Brazil / 1957- 1971 Cafu / Brazil / 1990- 2006 George Best / N.Ireland / 1964 -1977 Bobby Charlton / England / 1958- 1970 Bobby Moore / England / 1962- 1973 Peter Shilton / England / 1970 -1990 Hakan Sukur / Turkey / 1992- (semi-retire) Diego Maradona / Argentina / 197- 1994 Paolo Maldini / Italy / 1988 -2004 Luigi Riva / Italy / 1965- 1974 Lothar Matthäus / Germany / 1980- 2000 Gerd Muller / Germany / 1966- 1974 Mohamed Al-Deayea / Saudi Arabia / 1990- 2006 (world's most capped player) Majed Abdullah / Saudi Arabia / 1977-1994 Thierry Henry / France / 1997- Lilian Thuram / France / 1994- 2008 (great tackler) Javier Zanetti / Argentina / 1994- (Semi-retire) Gabriel Batistuta / Argentina / 1991- 2002 to be a great player, you don't need to have ex- great football player father. This all player have came to this possition by their own work nand effort.

I would not pick any one player, there are so many talented ones.

Who's the Best teacher you ever had? That's a real question.

For every Great Player there is a person that player thanks and claims as a major Mentor in their life.

Every Year, Records are Broken and new ones are established by players that took a risk, worked hard and made the best of their abilities and talents to get where they are that day.

Truth is there is no single "best undisputed hands down greatest of all time in the game of American football" they are who they are because of the opportunity they took when the time was right when the whole TEAM worked as a unit to achive a common goal, and all those players who are in the hall of fame know that, and so do their team mates that helped them get there.

MY PICK: ROCKY BALBOA

Unlike the other sports you mention, football teams don't win on a single player...in hockey, Gretzky used to score five for the Oilers during their run...Jordan alone would win games for the Bulls...and Babe, I might argue against him in baseball, but that's not the point.

In football, you almost need to separate it to each position. So, without further adieu, I'll suggest a few...
QB John Elway
RB Walter Payton
WR Jerry Rice
OL Anthony Munoz
DL Mark Gastineau
LB Lawrence Taylor
DB Champ Bailey
K Morten Andersen
P Ray Guy

This may be unanswerable.
Can you really compare a defensive lineman to a quarterback for greatness?
Most people will only consider quarterbacks, running backs, and wide receivers -when answering this question. Don't great players play other positions as well?
Can you overlook the great players that played for "also ran" teams, for the players that played for the "glory" teams and got recognition?

BTW: Remember when Orenthal James Simpson was considered great - now his name is hardly mentioned in football contexts? Does the definition of greatness change with age?

PS: Remember that "great" N.O. Saints quarterback (who finally finisher his career with the Oilers and Vikings), Archie Manning. He must be proud of both his sons fight now.
