my homework says " the complement of an angle measures 39 degrees. What is the measure of the angle?

The angle necessary to reach a 90° when added to the first, necessarily acute angle. In your case, the base angle would be 51 degrees.

In geometry, when the total of the measures of two angles equals 90*, then they are called 'complementary angles', and each angle is called the complement of the other.
If the total of the measures of two angles equals 180*, then the angles are said to be 'supplementary angles', and each angle is called the supplement of the other.
In your example, the required angle would be 90* less 39* and so the measure of the required angle would be 51*.

complement angle = 90 degrees
supplement angle = 180 degrees

the answer to your problem is 51.

51+39=90
90=90

the angle's compliment is 141 degrees..to get the compliment of an angle subtract the degrees from 180.
