For the reason I suspected, viz:

"A blue rinse is a dilute hair dye used to reduce the yellowed (or translucent, showing scalp colour) appearance of greying hair on older women. The blue rinse supposedly makes yellow-white hair appear blue-white..."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_rinse

"There's a good reason for blue rinse. As we age, a yellow film develops over the eye, making colors look dull and muted. This is why the stereotypical old opera goer will wear bright red rouge and lipstick and a loud dress. To her eye, the red makeup looks pink.

White or gray hair will look brassy to her eye. With a blue rinse, the hair looks silver or white instead."

Older woman do not choose purple or blue when they get their hair dyed. I was told it's a chemical reaction. Well water and treatment build-up can cause the same even if you don't have grey hair.

'cos it's old age 'trendy'. Old people wonder why teenagers dye their hair Orange, Red or Blue, it's a group recognition thing! They also have 'Cauliflower' hair do's, wear beige, and all the old men wear flat hats! It's just to 'fit in', or maybe they just want to look like Dame Edna Everage! GRIN!

Why not? If you get to a ripe old age and can finally do what you want without upsetting employers etc, why shouldn't one go a bit extreme with one's hair?

I can't wait to hit 70, pillar box red hair for me, methinks! (Oh, and too much make-up, old ladies can get away with that too!)

Bleaching your hair over time causes hair to have a blue tint.

Because, due to ageing, their visual perception has diminished, and purple and blue are colors that they can appreciate...whereas the color gray is not appealing to them because of its neutral nature.
