I signed up to do a hip-hop dance with some people from school. I will be 1 of 3 guys among some 16 or so girls. I've always been self-conscious and shy, so that's one of the reasons I'm doing this - I don't want to be held back because of my shyness. But I'm considering dropping out since I've never performed in front of others and because I don't know how to dance (even though I'm willing and the guy who set this up said I don't need experience). Any advice on not chickening out of this dance?

One more thing, I like to dance when I go out to clubs and stuff. I think I'm ok but I've never done a choreographed routine

By the way, I don't know any of the other dancers. So that's kind of tough.

I've always been rather shy so I understand your concerns about performing in front of an audience. I've been studying and performing belly dance for a few years now. I am quite sure that nobody that I went to high school would believe it, because I was incredibly shy then. I am most comfortable in front of an audience in a troupe performance when I REALLY know the routine VERY WELL. Practice the routine enough that you know it well. When you're learning the routine work through it on your own at a slow pace, then speed up as you become comfortable with it. If you can, do a video recording of yourself while you practice. Then you can see what parts you need to focus on during rehearsals. The best thing you can do is HAVE FUN!!! If you're having fun while you're doing the routine you'll forget to be so self-conscious.

stick to it! it may seem hard but don't get discouraged! i'm a very shy person and am trying to overcome my social problems and dance has really helped me. its like when i'm on stage i don't feel shy or scared or nervous. its an amazing feeling! and I bet that after taking these lessons you'll talk with the people and feel more comfortable around them since you see them a lot. stick to it though and don't give up just because you feel scared. remember that every so often you really need to challenge yourself and just be "you know what even if I screw this whole dance its no going to be the end of the world". I know its hard, believe me I have the same problem but theres just this amazing thing about being up on the stage that will help you relax. :) good luck and don't give up!

You know - the best way to get over your shyness is to throw yourself wholeheartedly into the moves - give your whole concentration to the music, the steps, arms, everything - very soon your mind will be so absorbed in the learning process that you will forget about the audience - in fact you will become so taken over by the dance that you will feel very natural and won't even realise that you are "performing". Good luck with it - hang in there - if you enjoy what you are doing - everyone else will enjoy it with you.

Feel more self confidence. Think positive. Do all people participating in this group know this dance? Of course not. Imagine that you will have private tuition and you are the only one who is going to be in the class.

You enjoy dancing, right? Then concentrate on the art behind it and the fact that you're having FUN! If your confidence shines through, that's what matters and people will appreciate that

You could look at it like this: You are not and never have been a chicken s**t. So, don't start now. Get in there and do it baby. We know you can.
