Unless you want to purchase a better model in 6 months, I would say go with a better brand now. If you spend a little extra money your keyboard will last you twice as long. There are many good instruments on the market for around $300.
Here is what you will definitely need:
*At least 72 keys
*Touch Sensitive (when you press softly, yu get a more quiet sound, when you press firmly you hear a louder sound)
*A bench. Sitting the correct height is very important.

Check your local Music and Arts store. You can search for a location on their website http://www.musicarts.com They have some really good keyboards for fair prices.

Good luck to you!
