A hoax is an act intended to trick people into believing something is real that is not. A practical joke, ruse, prank, etc. A hoax doesn't always cause harm to someone or something.

A virus infects a human or a computer with something bad or something you don't want. A bug, disease, germ, illness, etc. A virus always causes harm and could be the end result of a hoax.

I send you an email that says you won $10 million dollars. To collect the money, just open the attached file and fill in the required information. When you open the attachment, you release a virus into your computer that destroys all your files. The email is the hoax. But because you believed it and opened the attachment, you received a virus. Hope this helps.
