In theory, there is justice when truth is discovered. Many lawyers try to bury truth to win a case. They deserve the bad rap for that.

I agree that even a criminal needs representation but the objective should never be to thwart justice by getting a guilty person freed for reasons unrelated to whether the crime was committed or not.

If lawyers were out for the truth, there would be no problem.

However, due to our legal system, they are "hired guns" to represent one side or another in either a criminal case or a civil lawsuit. As such, their goal is to win for their side, even if the truth never comes out. This is how lawyers can represent the most vile of murderers and rapists. Even knowing their client is guilty, they try to get them declared innocent because that is their job. Lawyers, in my opinion are ethical, because they do what they are paid for, but not always moral, because they reinforce the idea that individuals are not responsible for their own actions.

In regards to comparing lawyers to doctors, there is an old joke about that. "Doctors make people feel better by making people feel better. Lawyers make people feel better by making someone else feel worse."

Lawyers are criticized for making money because people often associate lawyers with frivolous lawsuits or class action suits where the lawyer winds up taking something like 1/3 of whatever settlement or judgment is handed down.

I have no disrespect for lawyers trying to win a case, but I feel many lawyers (especially those who deal with civil law) don't always act ethically. I have a tough time deciding about criminal defense lawyers. In general they are providing a public service by helping people defend themselves. But when they start manipulating the facts to win a case I think everyone in society loses.

doctor's have something called insurance going for them. And lawyers charge 200-600 dollars PER HOUR. And they charge you for every single thing they do when they're on your case, including calling you from they're car for a minute and rounding up to the hour. If you think I'm joking, I'm not. Doctors, however, are a very real source of aid, and they are trying to save people's lives. There's a very real difference between saving a case and saving a life.

Well, lawyers get a bad wrap because the few bad apples will do ANYTHING to win a case. It doesn't matter if other people's lives are destroyed, they will do whatever to win.
