A baby's anatomy is developed by around 12 weeks, but can still be hard to pick up on an ultrasound. Most doctors will look at your 20 week appointment. As long as baby cooperates and gives them the angle they need, you should be able to tell by then. Unless you have a 4D and see it in all it's 3-dimensional, glittering detail, don't necessarily take the first answer as concrete, have them keep checking. I was excited when they told me what mine was, but I asked again the next time just to make sure. It's easier to tell if it's a boy, but they can still be wrong.

There's a couple stationed here at the same post that was told all through her pregnancy that she was having a boy, up to her last appointments before she gave birth. They had a name picked out, blue nursery, all the good stuff. When the baby was born though and the husband got the Red Cross message, he had to ask "Who the hell is Katie?"...his daughter!!!
