Briefly:
No matter where you are from, you should book the flights as early as possible if you don't want to spend too much. It's only January now so you'll get a lot of discount now if you buy the flights for April. But if you do it in March it'll be a lot.
About the countries, it really depends on where you go and when you go. April is already high touristic season in most places of these countries. Meaning hotel rooms get expensive, beaches and touristic attractions get crowded etc. Living cost is in general some 20% more expensive than the States let's say.
If you want to see all these 3 in a row, you need quite a good amount of both time and money. It will be much cheaper if you join organized 'group' trips from a Tourist company. But disadvantage could bethose facts that you'll be on a tight schedule, understanding only what your tour guides say... You can also buy a private trip from those tourist companies but the prices will be higher.
If you want to have a good visit, buy guide books like Lonely planet or Bradt's etc about these Countries and plan the trip well (budget, booking the flights and hotels, selecting the things you want to see and experience etc) with your partner/s ASAP
Great chioce of locations! But make sure you visit Napoli, Firenze, Venetia and Roma
buon viaggio!

You can do this one of two ways, you can either buy a two month Youthrail pass and then your transportation and your sleeping arrangements are taken care of for 2 months... but that second month is expensive. OR you can buy just a ONE MONTH pass and not activate it until you have already been in Europe for a week or two. The time doesn't start until you activate it, so you can just keep it in your pocket until you are ready to lose it. If you want to be comfortable and have some room to do things on the spur of the moment, you need to have about $1000 per person per MONTH... so for 2 months that would be $2000 each. Before you do anything else, go to any bookstore in any mall and pick up "EUROPE BY EURAIL" and the "THOMAS COOK EURAIL TIMETABLE"... you will learn to live by those 2 books. You may also pick up FODOR'S EUROPE, but if you only want to carry 2 books, then get the first 2. The first one is a good general guide book and the second one is a timetable for ALL of the Eurail trains... times, stations, etc and you can't backpack without it. Mainly, you will be sleeping on trains at night and sightseeing during the day. If you want to spend more than one day exploring, then you arrive in the morning... sightsee during the day... get on the train to some overnight destination (this is why you MUST have the Timetable book) then you sightsee all day... get back on the train that night and go back to the first city. Back when I was your age, I had a few clothes in a small back pack and my guitar and made some decent money playing on street corners or in subway stations, so if you or your buddy can play guitar, you may want to think about that. Have fun

This link gives you information about a train pass. Then all you will need is a return flight to one of the countries you mentioned. After that, during your trip, you can just travel between the coutries you want to see by train. It's a really easy way of travelling, because you don't need a schedule or plan. It's also a lot cheaper than paying individually for every journey you make during your trip.

It is better to compare the pricing strategies of various Airlines. Some airlines give discounts, when you book in advance and in bulk. Plz don't compromise on quality of service, comfort etc. while comparing prices and finally arriving at a conclusion.
