Hey, I am a trinidadian and I can see how you can think it is tow different places. The offical name is The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. In many aspects we are. It is two separate islands.
Trinidad- Is an Industrial island where the main export is Petrolium and Natural Gas and manufactured goods. Trinidad was First populated by Amerindians. Then it was rediscovered by Columbus in 1498 for Spain. It was populated by the French through the Cedula of Population. The labour was African Slave labour. It was then Captured by the Bristish ( can't remember what year) When Slavery was abolished East Indians were brought to work on the estates as Indentured Labour. Chinese, Syrian- Lebonese are some other groups that came to Trinidad to work. As a result of this Trinidad is a very diverse place, where lots or races live. There is no real conflict among the races and there is a lot of intermingeling. Trinidadian dialect tends to mix english words with french, spanish and even Hindi words. Alot of people in Trinidad have names that reflect the history of the country.
Tobago- Is the smaller of the two countries and is more laid back than Trinidad. It's main export tourisum. Tobago was first owned by the Dutch, then the french and was eventually captured by the British. There are maininly black people living in tobago. Indians who live there came over from trinidad. Right now Tobago is very populated with German land owners, who unfortunately own most of the land in Tobago.( stupid people sold all their land. Now Trinidad has to buy it back at inflated prices)
Trinidad and Tobago share an economy but they are runned separetly. There is the Trinidad Paliment and the Tobago house of assembly who oversees Tobago alone.
Tobago have made lots of treats to become separate from Trinidad but they can never do that as Trinidad makes most of the GDP.
I think that Tobago should not be left to thier own affairs because it will just be trinidad who has to clean up thier mess.
I'm sorry. Am I going off.

WOW... see how football can place a country on the world map! Lol, i'm from thr Republic of Trinidad and Tobago (trini). Wea re a twin island republic, which essentially means that we are run by the same government, except that Tobago (the smaller of the two) is also governed by the Tobago House of Assembly. Both places use the sane currency : $TT . Trinidad however is the more industrialised/business/commercialised of the two amd Tobago is the more idyllic, touirist oriented of the two.
I wouldn't reprat what has already been said tho!

In a way you are correct because Trinidad and Tobago are 2 different islands. When we put the islands Trinidad and Tobago together, that's when you get the country Trinidad and Tobago.

The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago is an archipelagic state[1] in the southern Caribbean, lying northeast of the South American nation of Venezuela and south of Grenada in the Lesser Antilles. It also shares maritime boundaries with Barbados to the northeast and Guyana to the southeast. The country covers an area of 5,128 square kilometres (1,979 sq mi) and consists of two main islands, Trinidad and Tobago, and 21 smaller islands. Trinidad is the larger and more populous of the main islands; Tobago is much smaller, comprising about 6% of the total area and 4% of the population.
Originally settled by Amerindians of South American origin at least 7,000 years ago,[2] Trinidad and Tobago was occupied by Arawakan- and Cariban-speaking peoples at the time of European contact in 1498. A history of slavery and indentureship has left the country with a mixture of African, Indian, mixed-race, European, Middle Eastern and Chinese people. All these groups have left an imprint on the national culture. Trinidad and Tobago became an independent nation (from the United Kingdom) in 1962 and a republic in 1976.
Officially Trinidadians or Tobagonians, the people from Trinidad and Tobago are often informally referred to as Trinbagonians or Trinis. Unlike most of the English-speaking Caribbean, Trinidad and Tobago is a primarily industrialised country whose economy is based on petroleum and petrochemicals. Trinidad and Tobago is famous for its pre-Lenten Carnival and as the birthplace of steelpan, calypso and limbo.
The capital city Port of Spain, is currently a leading candidate (along with Miami) to serve as the headquarters of the Permanent Secretariat of the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA-ALCA

Yes easy mistake to make. As a teenager I thought the same... but later realized, thanks to the cricket, that it was one administrative area/region.
At this time, I can't think of any other country/territory which has a singular government which includes the word "and" in its country name.
