Why is it that when someone asks a question in a do-it-yourself forum, there are always a handful of incompetents that answer "call a professional", because they themselves don't know how to do whatever is being asked? Is it just to get points for "answering" a question? Even though their answer simply indicates their own inability?

I often answer that if it is appropriate. When I do, it is because I know a lot about what I am doing, not because I know too little.

Some of the questions make it totally obvious the person has absolutely no idea what they are even talking about. Electricity can kill you. So can gas and carbon monoxide.

If you think that all electrical problems are called short circuits, you know NOTHING about electricity. Also, if you think there is polarity in a house circuit, you know NOTHING about electricity.

If you don't know how to check for a gas leak, you should not be working with gas. If you think it is okay to not vent a clothes dryer, you shouldn't be doing that either.

In the last case, we might be able to tell you enough here, but in the others, you are dangerous. The only proper answer is then "Call a pro."

I always turn in a "I don't know" answer for point gaming and I give them a thumbs down. Too many people are guessing. Some just to get points, others because they want to "feel" like they are helping. Some people get off on that. Some just don't know enough to know what they don't know.

By the way, what is your profession? Please post everything that you know about it here. LOL.

I think they just go thru and do it for the points. Big deal. What do the points do anyway? But they do it. If I don't know an answer I just go to the next question. Once in a while its fun but some people go from Q to Q just to show up. It's not right. They should lose points for saying things like that. Especially the ones that just write....I don't know. Yea. That's worth 2 points. It should be minus 5. They take points away if you wanna ask a question but they give them for stupid stuff. I don't get it. I'm with you.

This does not happen only the DIY forum. Every other forum I have visited had the same thing. I think you are right, I think people want to get the points although for the life of me I can't figure out why. The ones that really drive me crazy are the ones who answer "sorry I can't help"

I've noticed that a few times. But I also think that the way some people ask their questions, you can tell that they have no clue. Its in everybody's best interest not to get hurt, so call a professional if you have no idea about how to wire a breaker box or risk getting seriously hurt.

Some times it is good advice to say contact a pro because some of these posters look to be embarking on projects with little knowledge of what issues should be carefully considered. I agree though, the majority are points gatherers.

so whats your question? why do people who dont know as much as you answer questions? Maybe they are just trying to be helpful. Maybe you shouldnt be so "professional" try a site for "professionals" and then you will fit in.
